The moment I saw her, I wanted to have her in my arms, my lips on her lips, my mouth on her body. I wanted her in the foyer, on the patio, in the bed.

I needed her.

It was a animal-like, primal need that was different from anything I’d ever felt before. This woman was literally perfect for me, in every sense of the word. In every way.

My body had known it from the first time we’d met, at the hotel bar. My heart had been convinced after the first night we’d spent together.

But my brain resisted. The journalist in my kept stacking up the facts against the unknowns, and it was definitely a lopsided list. My heart didn’t care, though. And my body gave zero fucks.

Still, we had some time before my body and my heart could get what they wanted, and my brain was dying to know more about her—things I’d wondered about, but never seemed to make time to ask during our frenzied, hectic, too-short-moments together.

“So, what’s waiting for you back in Dallas?” I asked, as we were settling in to the third—or fourth, maybe—course of our seemingly never-ending meal.

She blinked, then cocked her head to the side. “I, um… what?”

I grinned. “Sorry for the random question. I just wonder what your life is like? Your typical day. What—or who—might be waiting for you back home.”

“There’s definitely no who, unless you count my parents. But they’re not part of my day-to-day. Sometimes not even week-to-week. So, I don’t know, really. I’ll be finishing my journalism degree, and then… who knows? I’ll probably end up staying close to Dallas, though.”

“Journalism can end up being a lot of travel. I was over thirty before I bought my apartment in New York. Before that, I spent my twenties living out of hotel rooms across the world.” I smiled again and raised my glass in a mock toast. “Although none nearly as nice as this one.”

“Anything—or anyone—special waiting for you back in Manhattan?”

“Nope,” I shrugged. “An apartment that’s too quiet. I’ll probably take a few days off after this trip before I start on anything new. Always takes me a little while to get back into the east coast groove after being out here.”

It sounded boring when I said it out loud. Boring, dull, uneventful… yep. Pretty accurate. But it was the life I’d always worked toward, right? It’s what I spent those years living out of suitcases to do, wasn’t it?

Wasn’t that the dream? To pay your dues and have a nice place to call home, while being able to pick and choose the work you wanted to do? Sounded really good, in theory.

Why, then, did the thought of going back to it make me want to throw up?

“That sounds nice,” she said, smiling. But even though her tone seemed genuine, nice was about the best adjective I could hope for. It certainly didn’t sound fun. Or exciting.

Or perfect.

“Yeah, it’s nice enough, I guess.” But the words sounded hollow, even as they were coming out of my mouth.
